Can I Start Driving a Car at 16?
In most cases, you must be 17 years old to drive a car on public roads in Great Britain. However, you may be able to drive from age 16 if you receive, or have applied for, the enhanced rate of the mobility component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP).
You can apply for your first provisional driving licence before you turn 17, subject to the DVLA eligibility rules, and you can start preparing for your theory test before beginning practical driving lessons.
What Will I Do on My First Driving Lesson?
Your instructor will first check your provisional driving licence and make sure you meet the legal eyesight requirement. You must be able to read a number plate made after 1 September 2001 from 20 metres, using glasses or contact lenses if required.
Your instructor will then discuss your previous driving experience, learning needs and goals before introducing the vehicle controls and safety checks.
Your first lesson will be adapted to your experience. A complete beginner will normally start in a suitable quiet area and be introduced gradually to moving off, stopping, steering and basic observations. If you already have driving experience, your instructor may assess your current ability before planning your training.
How Long Does the Practical Driving Test Take?
A standard DVSA car driving test usually takes around 40 minutes.
During the test, the examiner will assess your general driving ability, ask you to complete an eyesight check and vehicle safety questions, include approximately 20 minutes of independent driving, and normally ask you to complete one reversing exercise.
The test may take longer in some circumstances, such as an extended test.
How Many Driving Lessons Will I Need?
There is no fixed number of driving lessons that everyone needs. Each learner progresses at a different rate.
The number of hours you need can depend on your previous driving experience, age, confidence, frequency of lessons, learning style, private practice and how quickly you develop safe and independent driving skills.
Your Aceway instructor will regularly assess your progress and help you understand which areas still need development before you are ready for your practical driving test.
Where possible, additional private practice with a suitable supervising driver can also help you gain experience between professional lessons.
What Type of Car Will I Be Driving?
Aceway instructors use a range of modern Manual and Automatic tuition vehicles, fitted with dual controls for safety.
The exact vehicle will depend on the instructor allocated to you and the vehicles available in your area.
If you have a particular requirement or preference, let our team know when you enquire. We cannot guarantee a specific make or model, but we will try to accommodate reasonable requests where possible.
Do You Offer Theory Test Training?
Yes. Aceway provides free theory test training and support to help learners prepare for their DVSA theory test.
We currently run live theory test training on TikTok Sunday to Friday at around 9pm, where we work through theory questions, explain the answers and help learners understand the rules rather than simply memorising them.

Do I Get Charged If I Cancel My Driving Lesson?
Yes. You must give your instructor at least 48 hours' notice if you need to cancel or rearrange your driving lesson.
If you give less than 48 hours' notice, the lesson may be charged at the full lesson rate because that time was reserved for you and may not be possible to offer to another pupil.
Exceptional circumstances may be considered at Aceway Driving School's discretion.
How Should I Take My Lessons to Make Learning More Efficient?
Regular lessons generally help you maintain progress and reduce the amount of time spent revisiting skills from previous lessons.
For many learners, 2-hour lessons can provide enough time to practise a skill properly, drive in different situations and reflect on what has been learned.
Where your schedule, instructor availability and budget allow, having lessons consistently each week can help maintain momentum.
However, every learner is different. Your instructor can recommend a lesson frequency and duration based on your progress, experience and individual learning needs.
How Do I Apply for My First Provisional Driving Licence?
You can apply for your first provisional driving licence online through GOV.UK or by post using the appropriate DVLA application form.
Applying online is normally the simplest option. You will need to meet the DVLA eligibility requirements and provide the required identity information.
Where Do I Book My Theory Test?
You can book your official DVSA theory test online through GOV.UK.
When booking, you can search for available theory test centres and choose a suitable location and appointment.
Be careful when searching online, as third-party websites may charge additional fees. We recommend using the official GOV.UK theory test booking service.
Your Aceway instructor can also guide you if you are unsure about the process.
Can I Start Driving Lessons Before Passing My Theory Test?
Yes. You do not need to pass your theory test before starting normal driving lessons, provided you have a valid provisional driving licence and meet the legal requirements to drive.
Starting practical lessons while studying for your theory test can actually be helpful because real driving experience can make road signs, rules, hazards and other theory topics easier to understand.
However, if you want to book one of Aceway's Intensive/Fast Track courses, you must have already passed your theory test before starting the intensive course.
How do I pay for my driving lessons?
Online using our online system or pay your driving instructor directly! Using our online system is convenient but it will charge 3% online booking and admin fee as it takes more admin job for our team to transfer the funds to instructor, then trace the payments and arrange the booking for you so we have to pass the cost on to be able to provide affordable driving lesson!
Paying your instructor cash or bank transfer to their account Directly will have no extra charges!
Our choice and advice would be pay your instructor directly in cash or bank transfer and save 3%. So the choice is yours!
Should I Choose an Intensive Driving Course?
An intensive driving course can be a good option if you want to complete your training over a shorter period and can commit to several hours of driving each week.
However, intensive training is not automatically the best option for every learner. Some learners benefit from more time between lessons to practise, reflect and build their skills gradually.
Your previous driving experience, confidence, learning style, availability and instructor availability should all be considered.
If you're unsure, speak to Aceway before purchasing an intensive course and we can help you decide whether regular lessons or intensive training is more suitable.
Does Aceway Offer Intensive (Fast Track) Driving Courses?
Yes. Aceway offers 20-hour Silver, 30-hour Gold and 40-hour Blue Diamond Fast Track courses for learners who want to complete their driving training over a more concentrated period.
Intensive course schedules are arranged subject to instructor availability, and the appropriate number of hours will depend on your existing driving experience and training needs.
You must have passed your theory test before starting an Aceway Intensive/Fast Track course.
Do You Offer Pass Plus?
Yes. Aceway offers Pass Plus training for newly qualified drivers who want to develop their skills and gain experience beyond the standard driving test.
Pass Plus covers additional driving situations such as motorways, dual carriageways, rural roads, night driving and different weather conditions.
There is no additional practical driving test to pass at the end of the course. Some insurers may recognise Pass Plus when calculating insurance premiums, but a discount is not guaranteed and will depend on the insurer.
Can I Take My Practical Driving Test Before Passing My Theory Test?
No. You must pass your theory test before you can take your practical car driving test.
Once you have passed your theory test, you can book your practical driving test through the official GOV.UK service.
Remember that under the current practical-test booking rules, you are responsible for booking and managing your own test. If you intend to use your instructor's car, agree the proposed test date and time with your instructor before booking.
Can I Request a Female Driving Instructor?
Yes. Aceway has female driving instructors in selected areas of Birmingham, offering Manual and Automatic lessons subject to availability.
If you specifically request a female instructor, both Manual and Automatic lessons are charged at our Automatic lesson prices.

How Much Are Driving Lessons with Aceway?
New learners can currently book their first 2 hours from £60 for Manual or £62 for Automatic.
After the introductory offer, lesson prices depend on whether you choose Manual or Automatic training and whether you book individual lessons or one of our discounted lesson packages.
Evening and weekend rates may also differ.
What Is the Aceway Triple Guarantee?
Aceway's Triple Guarantee gives eligible learners three additional benefits:
First Lesson Satisfaction Guarantee – book and pay for a 2-hour first lesson. If you're unhappy during the first hour, tell your instructor and end the lesson before the second hour begins to qualify for a full refund.
Second Practical Test Fee Paid – if you fail your first practical test, Aceway will pay the DVSA fee for your second attempt, provided you meet the eligibility requirements, including passing an Aceway mock test before your first attempt.
